Chemists Celebrate Earth Week Poem Contest Entries Due

The Indiana Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is sponsoring an illustrated poem contest for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade (Four categories: K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12).
Contest Deadline: May 3, 2020
Prizes: 1st Place = $100, 2nd Place = $50, and 3rd Place = $25 in each age group.

Winners will advance to the National Illustrated Poem Contest for a chance to be featured on the ACS website and to win prizes!

Write and illustrate a poem using the CCEW theme, “Protecting Our Planet through Chemistry.”

Your poem must be no more than 40 words and in the following styles to be considered:
HAIKU – LIMERICK – ODE – ABC POEM – FREE VERSE – END RHYME – BLANK VERSE

Possible topics related to sustainable chemistry include:

  • Green chemistry
  • Clean air and water
  • Environment
  • Natural resources
  • Pollution
  • Waste

Entries will be judged based upon:

  • Green chemistry Environment Pollution
  • Clean air and water Natural resources Waste
  • Artistic Merit – use of color, quality of drawing, design & layout
  • Poem Message – fun, motivational, inspiring about yearly theme
  • Originality Creativity – unique, clever and/or creative design
  • Neatness – free of spelling and grammatical errors

Think Like a Molecule Poster Session Registration Deadline

It’s that time of year again!

This is a call to students and ACS members to submit your abstract for The Think Like a Molecular poster session. The deadline to submit your abstract is March 5 and a link can be found below. https://forms.gle/QX8oubn8qzksV1WV9

This year, The Indiana local section is partnering with IU for their bicentennial Beyond Borders Event. By submitting your abstract you will also have access to the Beyond Borders symposium, a legacy project of the IU Bicentennial. The event will be held on April 9-10, 2021 and will draw on Indiana University’s over 200 years of leadership in higher education and research by bringing the state’s academic associations together virtually. The symposium will serve as the host of annual meetings for 13 state academic organizations and will provide an online venue for scholars, researchers, students, and professionals to discuss ideas, collaborate, and share their work with others.

There are three opportunities to present this year,

Think Like a Molecule Poster Session April 10, 10:30am-3 pm
2021 ACS Indiana Selected Graduate Student Symposium (Selected Oral Presentations) April 9, 10:30am-12:30 pm
IU200 Multidisciplinary Poster Presentations April 9, 5 – 6:30 pm

Even though the sessions are virtual, you will be presenting and answering questions LIVE for one hour of the time designated for the session. The Think Like a Molecule presentations will be followed by our keynote address from Haley Keith, Co-founder and CEO of MITO Materials, and awards ceremony (there will be CASH prizes – GRAND PRIZE = $500)

For the IU200 Multidisciplinary Poster Presentations April 9, 5 – 6:30 pm, presenters were also be required to be present on zoom during this time to present/answer questions.

ACS Spring 2023 Kids Zone banner

The ACS Committee on Community Activities and President Judy Giordan invites you to join us for hands-on activities with your family and school aged children during the ACS Kids Zone – Presidential Outreach event, located at the Concord Neighborhood Center in Indianapolis, IN on Saturday, March 25, from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. ET. The event is being held in conjunction with ACS’ Spring 2023 meeting. During Kids Zone, actual chemists from the ACS community and chemistry students will perform hands-on chemistry demonstrations. For your participation, you will also receive exciting take-home goodies!
